Description:

Diabetes:

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin in the body or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin that is produced by the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the glucose levels in the blood.

Drug Introduction:

Glimepiride and Metformin are anti-diabetic drugs. This combination is prescribed to patients with type 2 diabetes. Glimepiride belongs to the class of 'Sulfonylureas' under the sub-class of 'Second Generation Analogs'. Metformin is under the classification of 'Biguanides'.

Uses / Indications:

Proper control of diabetes reduces the risk of heart attack or stroke. Improper control of diabetes leads to kidney damage, blindness, nerve damage, sexual function problems and others. Glimepiride and Metformin are recommended to be used with proper diet and exercise regularly, possibly with other medications.

Interactions / Warnings:

This medication is to be only used when prescribed by a doctor and NOT to be self-administrated.

Pregnancy interaction:

Metformin passes into breast milk in small quantities, consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Inform your doctor of all the medications that you take in case you’re about to have a surgery. You may need to stop this medication for a short amount of time depending on your surgery. Limit exposure in sunlight and use sunscreen when going outside during daylight. Limit alcohol consumption while taking this medication, since it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and developing low blood sugar. This combination of drugs is to be only used during pregnancy if clearly mentioned by your doctor. This combination can cause changes in menstrual cycle and increase the risk of becoming pregnant. Consult your doctor before administration of this drug.

Side Effects:

Side effects include low blood sugar levels, vomiting, nausea, headache, abdominal pain, flatulence, weight gain, diarrhea or constipation, tiredness, metallic taste. Lactic acidosis is the most serious complication. It is recommended to contact your doctor in case you face any of these symptoms to change your prescribed dosage.

This drug can be administrated orally; dosage as prescribed by the doctor.

Glimepiride drug provokes a brisk release of insulin from the pancreas. Metformin suppresses glucose output from the liver. And it enhances insulin-mediated glucose disposal in muscles and fat.
